We already know that certain foods can help strengthen your immune system and help keep your body functioning better. Today I want to talk about what happens when you eat foods that you shouldn’t eat.  Did you know one of the least well-known side effects of a poor diet is inflammation? There are recent studies that suggest many ailments currently associated with aging are actually caused by inflammation. This happens when we eat food that our bodies don’t like, or might even have some sort of allergy to.  When you eat foods that are bad for your health, it causes you to look older. Our customers are happy with the results they get when they use our natural skin care system, but some of them are still not fully pleased with their overall looks. Although their skin texture is better and age spots have faded, they may still have some puffiness and the color of their skin is not as warm. What else can they do? WebMD tells us there is plenty they can do:

…..Quality Counts

“There’s an incredible amount of evidence that says that eating junk puts your body into an inflammatory state,” says Timothy Harlan, MD, assistant professor of medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine, a former restaurateur known as “Dr. Gourmet,” and author of Just Tell Me What to Eat!

“Poor-quality foods, like Trans fats, cause inflammation — and aging is basically a chronic inflammatory state,” Harlan says. “Can you look older because you’re eating crap? Absolutely.” For example, too much sugar and processed carbohydrates in the diet can lead to the production of what are called AGEs — advanced glycation end products. “These are associated with a number of diseases, like heart disease and diabetes, but they also damage the collagen and fibers of your skin,” says Andrea Giancoli, MPH, RD, a nutrition policy consultant for the California Center for Public Health Advocacy and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

It is not just your looks that are on the line. Eating too much of foods that ramp up inflammation — or clog your arteries, or pack on extra pounds — can be bad news, from head to toe.” The article goes on to list some of the foods we already know are bad for us: fried foods, sugary treats, donuts, processed meats like hot dogs and sandwich meats… we have heard all of this before; it’s even more important to pay attention once we get into our 40’s and 50’s.

Bonne Foi’s Seaweed Extract, new Nourishing Cream, and the Exfoliating Night Serum all work to make your skin softer and remove wrinkles. Taking care of yourself on the inside is just as important for how your skin looks as how you take care of yourself from the outside!

We all love to indulge in a burger and fries, but save those for a once-in-a-while treat. Have a little ice cream, sure–once a month or so. Fish, fresh veggies, fresh fruit, and lean protein should be the staples of a healthy diet. Eat well to live well, as my Mother would say….
